Design is my livelihood. Lately, I have been busy designing book covers, book layouts, wedding invitations. While it is my profession -- people often ask where I get my ideas from or, "How do you do that?". I too am sometimes surprised at where all the ideas come from. I did, after all, go to school for this - I have a knack for this as well as a natural curiosity for design in all things so naturally this is where it is that I should be working, no? This is the same for people in all professions, right?
Following my passion is something I am so happy to be able to say I have been able to do. Susan Reid is all about helping people follow their passion. Actually I am currently working on her book, both cover and layout, Discovering Your Inner Samurai. Here are 2 solutions for the possible cover. This was a great project for me to work on as I was able to directly draw on my own personal aesthetic and life experience. So, here my experience provided the inspiration for this design. I have studied and lived in Asia so naturally I have felt an affinity for this project.
The cover, while conveying the strength of both women and the samurai is also intended to reflect an Asian wisdom and spirituality as well as the fluidity of femininity. I think the illustration provided by Susan captures a lot of these qualities I just had to bring it all together with design and color that is well suited to marketing a book and bringing the potential reader inside where those themes continue. I will proceed in a future post on the interior look that brings the outside in and vice verse.
